AI is meant to take the place of human intelligence. Machines that function as human intelligence use this. The magic of AI is slowly pervading our lives. Everyone seems to be talking about AI—from leaders of the industry, scientific thinkers, heads of state, business houses to the grandmother next door. Even though AI is making life easier—Alexa can handle your shopping list, Siri can help you find directions; they can do jobs as per your command, automatic cars let you relax while driving, AlphaFold developed by Google DeepMind that can predict a protein’s 3D structure from its amino acid sequence thus helping in research and pharmaceuticals, and ChatGPT – a virtual assistant developed by OpenAI based on large language models( LLMs) enables user to refine and steer a conversation towards a desired length , format, style, level of detail and language and so on. There are significant risks associated with this technology serious enough to even affect the human race as such. The advantages are many; increase precision for some repetitive jobs, lower operating costs, increased efficiency, enhanced judgement in specific circumstances etc.
Disadvantages are also many like job losses due to growing automation, possibility of prejudice or inequity stemming from the dataset utilized for AI training, potential issues with cybersecurity, insufficient transparency regarding the decision-making process and potential to create misinformation and malicious campaigns, social manipulation, weakening ethics and loss of human influence. Biggest danger is from uncontrollable self-aware AI.
Machines’ lack of imagination, sensibility, emotions, logical thinking, language processing, and wisdom is the main threat they represent. AI do not have conscience and thus AI is lacking ability to address complex psychological concerns.
The lack of laws, rules, and restrictions means that society is not ready for radical, higher-level artificial intelligence just yet. There is a very serious risk associated with disregarding the ethics and laws governing the use of artificial intelligence. Already the concerns are raised about ChatGPT. The God father of AI Geoffery Hinton, Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk, three-decade researcher on AI Yoshua Bengio, and many more are cautioning about the use of AI. Never underestimate the power of greed and evil people to corrupt everything good. A tiny mistake could cause a huge problem that reverberates around the world. Planet lacks the policies in place or the assurance that any organization globally could control the abuse of this technology. The challenging times are ahead as there is a real threat of self-aware AI machines can take over the humans.
